On Writing: Bad Boys

readingwithavengeance

The “bad boy” is huge in fiction right now, but we seem to have conflated the original idea of a bad boy with a list of domestic abuse signs.  This has caused somewhat of a backlash against anything even resembling a bad boy, but for those who enjoy the trope, there’s no reason to throw the baby out with the bathwater!  Getting rid of the problems can be done without getting rid of the bad boy and the basic fantasy that he embodies.

There are so many different ways to be a bad boy, and it’s not necessary to have a character hit abusive highlights in order to have the appeal.  Try including or focusing on some of the following traits:

  • The tough-guy look is an obvious note to hit, and there’s no denying that there’s a certain appeal to tattoos and leather.  But there’s varieties in that, as well.  He doesn’t have to dress like a biker; a pair of well-worn jeans or a penchant for brazen belt buckles can do the job just as well.  A general rule of thumb: be more casual and/or blue collar than convention calls for.

So I’m off to a bit of a slow start with this read-a-thon although I am reaching my goals for the amount of time I’m spending reading. I think once I get done the next 2 audio books, the ebooks may go much quicker. Also, I will have a lot more time on the weekends for reading! I am pleased with the number of blogs I’ve been able to visit and comment on. I’ve discovered a couple blogs I want to start visiting regularly and read some amazing reviews!
Speaking of reviews, I have one that needs to be written tomorrow for Gated (which was awesome). That’s one of my read-a-thon goals that I’ve set for myself, not just complete the book but also write the review as soon as possible. If I get too far behind on reviews, I tend to skip over some.
How are you doing with your reading goals? What other goals have you set for yourself during this read-a-thon?

Author – Melissa Landers
Publisher – Disney Hyperion
Expected Publication – February 4, 2014

Interplanetary relations have never been more exciting! The first in a funny, romantic YA sci-fi series.
Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.
Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.
Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.
But when Cara’s classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn’t safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara’s locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.
Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she’s fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

Doesn’t this sound fantastic? This is exactly the type of light fun read that I look forward to when I’m burnt out on tragic heroines and desolate post-apocalyptic worlds. I know this doesn’t come out until February of next year but I am really looking forward to reading this AND having that lovely cover on my bookshelf!
What are you waiting on this Wednesday? I add so many books to my to-read list by browsing everyone’s WOW posts that I made a WOW Goodreads shelf! What about you? How many books have you added after first seeing them on a Waiting on Wednesday post?
